MILAN ? Italy's national film association has selected Emanuele Crialese's film "Terrafirma" as Italy's entry for the best foreign language Academy Award.
"Terrafirma" tells the story of an Italian fisherman who hides a woman and her son who have arrived illegally on a small island. His act of generosity, following the law of the sea, is in direct conflict with laws governing migration ? and the move turns the fisherman's life upside down.
The movie made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the special jury prize earlier this month.
Crialese's 2006 film "Nuovomondo" ("The Golden Door") won a Silver Lion at Venice, and went on to worldwide acclaim.

That?s where filmmakers, actors and members of the press face off and do what Fanboys do best: Argue about anything and everything pop culture.
Wood, who?s currently starring in FX?s hit show ?Wilfred,? and Monaghan, currently on the web series ?Goodnight Burbank? and eternally known as Charlie from ?Lost,? squared off in a passionate debate over the video game franchise ?World of Warcraft.?
Tempers flared at that point, as Monaghan dropped some major WoW knowledge on his opponent. But Wood showed no respect for the mega-popular video game, calling it ?a complete waste of time.? He then riled up the Warcraft crowd by proclaiming the "Legend of Zelda" series was enough fantasy gaming for him.
The trash talking seemed to inspire Monaghan. He pummeled Wood throughout the match, even opening a cut below Wood?s eye (of the Tiger?). The fight was about as coordinated a fight as you would expect from two guys best known for movies in which they wore hairy, prosthetic feet. The fans didn?t seem to mind. What they lacked in finesse, style and skill, they made up in sheer unintentional hilarity.
The Fantastic Debates were sponsored by ?Knuckle,? a documentary about bare-knuckle boxing which hits theaters in December.
Judging by the results of their gloved showdown, it?s fortunate the two actors didn?t mimic the film?s bare-knuckle style, or things could have gotten really ugly. We think Wood learned a valuable lesson: Mock ?World of Warcraft? at your peril.

The Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said in a notice on its website Friday that it was studying lead emissions from the two factories, one of which is a large lead-acid battery plant run by U.S.-based Johnson Controls.
The Pudong district government, where the cases were found, issued a statement saying it believed the Johnson Controls factory was the main source of lead emissions in the area.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Johnson Controls said it was taking residents' concerns about lead exposure very seriously and cooperating with the authorities, but that it had no reason to believe its battery factory was causing contamination.
The company earlier confirmed it had suspended production after hitting its annual lead use quota.
Staff at the other company, Shanghai Xinmingyuan Automobile Accessory Co., confirmed it had stopped its lead-related production, which the environment bureau said was unauthorized.
"We did not know that we cannot produce products with lead without a license," said Li Zhiliang, a manager at the factory, which according to trade websites makes wheel balance weights and plastic auto accessories for Shanghai Volkswagen.
Li said his plant did not produce any lead emissions.
"Actually our products have won awards for environmental protection," Li said.
Families living in Kanghua New Village, a small block of apartment buildings erected 15 years ago to house farm families moved to make way for the city's Kangqiao Industrial Zone, say recent checks showed many of their children had abnormally high blood lead levels.
The source of the lead contamination has not been confirmed. But the village is located just north of the zone and close to chemical, battery and electronics equipment factories.
Johnson Controls says its battery plant was named a "national model enterprise for occupational health and safety" in 2006. The factory has lead emissions at about one-seventh the Chinese national standard and employees are regularly tested to ensure their blood lead levels remain low enough, the company said in an emailed statement.
Earlier this week, the company announced it was expanding in China, planning a new $100 million plant to make start-stop batteries for vehicles. Such batteries cut fuel use and emissions by automatically shutting off a standard gas-powered engine when it idles and restarting it when the driver engages the clutch or releases the brake.
The company said it was considering several locations for the new factory.
Soaring use of cars and electric scooters is driving strong demand for lead acid batteries, and their production and recycling are a key source of lead contamination.
China has begun cracking down on emissions of lead and other heavy metals following scores of poisoning cases. But reports of clusters of cases in big cities like Shanghai are uncommon.
Lead poisoning can damage the nervous, muscular and reproductive systems, and children are particularly at risk.

ROME ? Italy's Parliament gave final approval to Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government's austerity measures, a combination of higher taxes, pension reform and slashed spending that sparked street protests in Rome.
The Chamber of Deputies passed the package by a vote of 314-300. The Senate, Parliament's upper chamber, already approved the measures.
Hundreds of demonstrators, some unleashing smoke bombs and others hurling paint, clashed with police in riot gear in the cobblestone squares and streets near Parliament as lawmakers were voting on the measures designed to fend off a financial crisis threatening much of Europe.
Earlier in the day, Berlusconi's government, whose allies had squabbled publicly over the package, won a crucial confidence vote called to discourage debate and hasten approval. European Central Bank and European Union leaders in Brussels had pressed Rome for quick passage to calm markets roiled by a crisis that could endanger the entire 17-member eurozone.
But the planned cuts and taxes have angered many Italians, fueling protests similar to those in other European nations grappling with the economic crisis.
As the street protest heated up, Rome storekeepers hastily shuttered display windows. With police helicopters buzzing overhead, officers in riot gear fanned out through the squares and alleys, herding the protesters away from Parliament and from the downtown palace where Berlusconi resides. At one point an officer struck a protester on his back with a club.
Berlusconi contends that the measures will shave more than euro54 billion ($70 billion) off Italy's deficit over three years through spending cuts, tax hikes, including raising the sales tax from 20 percent to 21 percent, and accelerating reform of the country's costly pension system.
Italy's deficit-to-gross domestic product ratio now stands at 120 percent, one of Europe's highest.
Italy has taken a pounding in the financial markets because of its high debt levels and poor growth. On Tuesday, the Italian Treasury raised euro3.86 billion ($5.27 billion) from the sale of five-year bonds, but it had to pay an interest rate of 5.6 percent ? a euro-era record high for Italy.
The debt problems of Italy, the eurozone's No. 3 economy, deepened fears across Europe over the health of the 17-nation eurozone and its vulnerability.
"The attack of the markets against Italy is a head-on assault on the entire eurozone," visiting Germany Economy Minister Philipp Roesler, said in Rome where he held talks with Italian Cabinet ministers.
The austerity measures contained a pledge to balance the budget by 2013, which Industry Minister Paolo Romani called an "an extraordinary signal of stability for our country."
Berlusconi on Wednesday met with Wang Gang, vice chairman of China's main government advisory body, amid speculation that Italy is trying to persuade Beijing to invest heavily in its industries. Romani told reporters that he "can't rule out the purchase of European government bonds by China," the Italian news agency LaPresse reported. "But it will be the Chinese economic system to decide how and when to invest."
Weeks of flip-flopping over the measures as Berlusconi tried to placate bickering allies needed for his government's survival plus sex scandals dogging the premier have triggered speculation over whether the 74-year-old media mogul can keep a strong grip on the coalition.
Berlusconi vows to serve out his five-year term, which ends in spring 2013, and predicts the austerity package will foster such economic recovery that voters will stay loyal to his center-right coalition.
But there is also skepticism by some economists whether the measures can revitalize the anemic economy. Industrialists and union leaders have joined forces in denouncing the package of doing virtually nothing to stimulate Italy's practically flat economic growth.
In tacit admission that Wednesday's package might fall short, lawmakers were starting to consider other steps, including one proposal to end the Catholic Church's exemption from property tax on its extensive real estate in Italy.
Another proposal up for debate was the possibility of yet another amnesty for tax evaders in hopes of bring in revenue. Decades of widespread tax evasion on income by the self-employed is blamed for a large part of Italy's stubborn deficit.
