Multiple Sclerosis Blog - Everyday Health

After some long hours of deep thinking and discussion, Caryn and I ? along with the guidance of my MS medical team, of course ? have come to a decision as to what to do next as to disease modifying medication for my multiple sclerosis. This is not a decision that we made lightly nor is it the path for everyone. I wanted to take some time to discuss my choice; not to influence anyone?s choice of med but rather to illuminate the process we went through to come to the decisions we made.

Before I get into what we decided, I figured a recap of where I?ve been might be in order.

When I was diagnosed with MS in April of 2001, there were only three drugs on the market; Avonex, Betaseron & Copaxone ? the famed ?ABC? drugs. My diagnosing neurologist recommended that I see a leading specialist in the field of MS treatment and research to help me make up my mind as to which med to begin. I?m pretty sure that I didn?t make an effort to look into the therapies before that next appointment (some 3 months later), as I wasn?t aware of how intricate the decision was to be?

I had, however, done a lot (a LOT-a lot) of research into the disease. When I met with this new doc (and an MS Fellow who was training under him), I asked loads of questions and spoke with language obtained in years of study and practice of science (albeit food science; the lingo isn?t really different). Acknowledging my understanding of biology and the body, we discussed the way in which each of the drugs was thought to work. I was sent away with a massively thick binder of information to digest and make my decision.

About two weeks later, I got in touch and told him of my decision to go with Betaseron. Arrangements were made for a nurse to come by and teach me how to mix my shots (yes, these were the days before pre-mixed medication, pre-filled syringes, and even before the auto-injection aids now available), how to inject myself, and how to care for both site and whole body after the every-other-evening ritual.

I spent a little longer tittering my dose up, as I had read the stories of side-effects and wanted to give my body as long to adapt as I could. I think it was just over a month before I was using a full dose.

In the ensuing 18 months, I experienced six relapses and was put on six different 3-day courses of steroids . I was 100% compliant with my shot schedule - never in that year and a half missing a single dose.

Still, my disease progressed.

My doc and I decided that, since my MS was getting aggressive, that it was time for us to get aggressive. Though there had been the addition of Rebif to the list of FDA approved MS meds, the only ?big gun? available to us was Novantrone, a chemotherapy agent approved for use in the US for ?breakthrough? disease &mdash meaning MS that wasn?t responding to the (now) ?ABCR? drugs.

We made the call to begin a 60-day ?wash-out? from Betaseron in order to prep for my new regiment of medication. Within a week of stopping treatment with the interferon med, I felt better than I had in nearly two years. I hadn?t realized the cloud of flu-like symptoms under which I had lived for so long. It wasn?t just me, my live-in girlfriend even noted that I seemed more ?alive? once I stopped taking my shots.

Thus ended the first phase of MS medications for me.

I had intended to make this a 2-part blog, but I now see that it will have to be split into thirds?

Please feel free to share your initial decision and experience choosing your therapy. We all learn from one another here at the Life With MS Blog!

Wishing you and your family the best of health.

Cheers,

Trevis

Protect Your Home or Business with Security or Surveillance ...

Many homeowners and businesses are increasingly turning to security and surveillance cameras, today.

There is an unfortunate amount of criminal activity occurring everywhere in the world. The situation is not helped by the poor economic state in many countries. While having a reliable security camera is a good idea for anyone, a camera with monitoring capabilities is a must. You can easily find just about any kind of surveillance camera because there are so many to choose from. However, you want to make the right choice because not all cameras are of high quality. Taking the time research and learn before buying is important. Here is some more information and reviews on some of the option available for security and surveillance cameras.

One very interesting kind of security camera is the covert surveillance camera. The name says it all: these are hidden cameras that can be used in lots of different ways, depending upon your security needs. For example, lots of common items can hold cameras within them securely enough that nobody else knows they?re there. Sadly, world events have made these kinds of cameras very popular. These cameras are made to be very special and you need to make sure that the camera you buy meets your particular surveillance needs. All cameras (truly all) are made with individual specifications and conditions for use. We all work with wireless technology in some form every day. The security and surveillance industry has also been working with wireless technology and it has had some great results as well. There are lots of reasons to use wireless security tools. For example, they provide a great deal of flexibility with applications and installation. As you can imagine, they are highly mobile which is something that may appeal to you depending on your needs. These products also hold appeal in their small size and packaging. This helps you to be more covert in your ops as well as freeing you from lots of wires.

The Swann Communications DVR4 Business Surveillance Kit is a good option if you want more than security camera surveillance. This is another security camera package that offers a little more in the way of monitoring and surveillance. There are two security cameras that are included.

This kit works well for use at home or by smaller businesses. Of course there are a range of options to choose from. You can record your video directly to an external hard drive or to your computer, as desired. It also has motion detection monitoring capabilities. There is an alarm that can be integrated with the motion detector.

Surveillance and security cameras come in a wide variety, as you can see. Remember to consider the general environmental conditions where the camera will operate and what you want to be able to see. Then, just begin doing the best research you can do and take your time.

If you want further information about cyber monday sales there is plenty of details not covered on this page, vist Author?s blog to uncover more.

Logitech unveils its Solar Keyboard Folio for the new iPad and iPad 2, we go hands-on

Logitech unveils its Solar Keyboard Folio for the new iPad and iPad 2, we go hands-on

There are all sorts of ways to go green these days, from driving an EV to installing super efficient light bulbs, and now Logitech's given us an environmentally friendly way to type tactilely on a tablet. It's a new iPad and iPad 2-friendly case called the Solar Keyboard Folio, which packs a Bluetooth keyboard powered by ambient light using the same solar cell tech found on the firm's computer keyboards. Once topped up with photons, Logitech claims its battery will keep you typing for over 1,000 hours even in complete darkness. The case is crafted of black, soft-touch, faux leather embossed with a small Logitech logo and has perforations for the iPad's speakers, plus a portal for the tablet's camera.

Its keyboard is made of gray plastic, and pecking at the grid is a similar experience to using the one found on Logitech's other recently released iPad typing peripheral, the Ultrathin Keyboard Cover. Buttons are short-throw and provide satisfying clicky feedback, but the space bar and shift keys have a hollow feel when pressed. Perhaps the Folio's most intriguing design feature is the feet on the corners of the cradle in which the iPad is placed. Those little nubs allow for two viewing angles -- your slate can be seated in a more upright position behind the keyboard for typing, or in the notches outside the two shift keys for a more obtuse viewing angle when the keyboard isn't needed. What's this bit of green gear cost? It goes on sale in the US and Europe this month with an MSRP of $130.

Chris Harrison and Wife Gwen: It's Over!

The Bachelor host Chris Harrison and his wife of over 18 years, Gwen, are divorcing.

The couple announced their separation "after much heartfelt consideration" today.

"Though we have made this incredibly difficult decision to separate, our love and mutual respect remain, and we look forward to sharing in the lives of our wonderful children," Chris and Gwen said in a joint statement Thursday.

Chris Harrison, Wife

Harrison, 40, is best known for hosting ABC's The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. In 2010, he was accused on-screen of hitting on a producer's wife.

At the time, he was hardly ruffled by the "cheap shot" of controversial contestant Rozlyn Papa. "I had nothing to hide," he said. "My wife was there."

The couple live 35 miles from Hollywood with their kids Joshua, 9, and Taylor, 7.

Harrison, who coaches both kids' soccer teams, is "an amazing father," Gwen says. "He's very loving and involved." He's also amazing at his job.

No word if he will also be the next Bachelor, but Harrison will be back running the show for its popular spinoff (see Bachelorette spoilers) May 14.

Pujols finishes April with no homers for Angels

(AP) ? Albert Pujols ripped a long drive down the left-field line, and the Los Angeles Angels rose in the dugout along with the crowd. The ball sliced through the heavy night air, soaring into the stands ? and hooking just a few feet foul outside the yellow pole.

The collective groan in Angel Stadium was audible from the dugout to the back of the bleachers Monday, and it's getting louder every night.

One month into a lavish contract with a new team, baseball's most feared slugger has lost his pop.

"I know I can hit home runs," Pujols said. "When it's going to happen, I don't know."

Pujols didn't hit a homer for the Angels in April, shockingly going 23 games and 92 at-bats without once doing what he did 445 times over 11 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. Dating back to late last season, the three-time NL MVP and two-time World Series champion is in the longest longball drought of his career, going 29 games and 121 at-bats without a homer.

For a gifted power hitter in the ostensible prime of his career, it's a distressing stretch of futility even in the earliest stages of his 10-year contract. For the Angels, who are paying $240 million for homers and victories from arguably the best offensive player of his generation, it's a simmering problem that's threatening to boil.

"I don't think about that, man," Pujols said. "It could be tomorrow, maybe the next day, a month from now, I don't know. My job is to get myself ready to play and take my swing. ... Home runs, when they come, they come in bunches."

They're not coming at all in Anaheim, and that's not what the Angels expected after signing Pujols away from the Cardinals for the next decade with the third-richest contract in major league history. Even worse, Pujols' new teammates have slumped along with him, and last-place Los Angeles heads into May in an 8-15 funk despite Monday's 4-3 win over majors-worst Minnesota.

Not even matching the worst start in franchise history has caused the Angels to waver from publicly backing their new first baseman. They still expect to see the sublime power of the man who hit three homers in Game 3 of the World Series last fall, matching a feat only accomplished by Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson.

"Even though he's a leader and has been around, we've still got to lift him up, because the game will slap you in the face sometimes and humble you," said fellow veteran Torii Hunter, who shared Pujols' power drought until hitting three homers in the last four games.

Pujols has the highest batting average and slugging percentage of any active player, but he's hitting .217 with just four RBIs and eight extra-base hits ? all doubles, and just one in the last nine games.

Pujols deploys a frustrated smirk whenever he's asked about his homerless start, saying he has "been in this situation before." He insists he's "putting good swings on the ball," as evidenced by that 350-foot foul ball in the fifth inning Monday night.

"I know what I need to do, and I'm making my adjustment," Pujols said. "I've been doing it for 12 years, so I know my hitting. Only God knows my swing better than me. When you're going through things like this, you've got to be careful who you listen to, because you have so many hitting coaches."

His actual hitting coach, Mickey Hatcher, irked Pujols on Monday night after the slugger learned the coach had shared fairly innocuous details about a pregame team meeting.

"That stuff needs to be private," Pujols said. "He should have never told the media. What we talked about at the meeting, not disrespecting Mickey, but that stuff should stay behind closed doors."

If Pujols wants extra coaching, he could get it from fellow players, talk-radio callers, and even fans on the street in Anaheim and Los Angeles, where Pujols' arrival was heralded by a massive marketing campaign and a sharp spike in ticket sales for the already-popular Angels, who outdrew the Dodgers for the first time last season.

The solutions range from swing adjustments to pressure-relieving mind games to extra days off. Pujols downplays the difficulties of switching leagues and studying the innumerable idiosyncrasies of 13 new pitching staffs, but Hunter acknowledges it's tough for Pujols.

Even ex-players have theories on Pujols, including Jim Leyritz, the former Yankees and Angels catcher who now hosts an Internet radio show.

"I can tell you that coming over from New York and playing here that first year (in 1997), it was tough to get motivated because the fans weren't the same," Leyritz said. "Every at-bat wasn't the World Series, and it took me a little while to get used to the slower pace. I'm sure that's what he's going through right now is that this is a little different pace than it was in St. Louis. It's different surroundings. It's going to take some time to adjust. Once he makes that adjustment, the rest of the American League better be careful."

Angels manager Mike Scioscia has tried numerous changes to his lineup, which ranks 13th out of 14 AL teams with just 80 runs in the Angels' first 23 games. Scioscia insists Pujols will find his own way out of the slump, even while it deepens.

"He's got a routine that's worked for him, he's committed to it, and there's nobody working harder to get out of this than Albert," Scioscia said. "Anyone who plays this game accepts the fact that there are going to be tough times during the season and during a career. But his talent is real, and he's going to grind it out until he gets to where he needs to be."

But 247 players have homered this season before Pujols, who led the NL in homers in 2009 and 2010. He hasn't even had many narrow misses, among them that foul ball and a drive off the top of the left-field fence against Oakland during the Angels' previous homestand.

Scioscia has no intention of moving Pujols from his No. 3 spot in the lineup. The Angels still have five months left in a season of enormous expectations, and they're confident Pujols has plenty of time to help fulfill them.

"Pujols, he's always going to get the nastiest of everything," Hunter said. "He's going to get the hardest pitches. The ball is going to move the most. ... I know, and everybody else knows, this guy is going to hit. Once he gets that big home run to win a game, it's over."
